Resident Evil film director “done” with franchise films

In the months leading up to Zach Cregger’s live action adaptation of Resident Evil, the same one shown off during the most recent State of Play, he’s received a fair bit of backlash.

During a talk with Deadline, Cregger effectively said he’s done with franchise films because in the end, he wants to write what he wants, not to satisfy data points.

“I have never been approached by another franchise. Maybe I have, but it would never get to me because I have been very clear that I’m not doing that. I’m doing this, and that’s it for me. So I’m not going to go tackle any other franchises — just because I’m a writer, and I want to write whatever I want to write. I don’t want to write something where I have to make sure I’m tagging different data points to satisfy X. I just want to satisfy me.”

As to why he was fine with taking up Resident Evil, it’s because he’s enthusiastic about the games and likes the story. Unfortunately, franchise fans — a subsect, at least — have been very vocal about the changes made to the source material, including the modern setting and snowy Raccoon City.

As it stands, it seems like Cregger is up to keep making Resident Evil films, even if other franchise films are largely off the table, as he has said he has “ideas” just a few days ago.
