Yo-Kai Watch Is Officially Making a Comeback

Yo-Kai Watch 2: Haunted Domain has been officially announced for the Switch 2. Nintendo's latest console is thus set to receive the first new Yo-Kai Watch game in well over seven years.

The original Yo-Kai Watch action RPG debuted for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan in July 2013, launching what quickly became one of Level-5's biggest properties. By late 2015, shipments of the handheld games had surpassed 10 million units worldwide, with the franchise itself expanding into anime, movies, manga, and an extensive merchandise business. However, new game releases slowed down significantly in the years that followed. Yo-Kai Watch 4 remains the latest mainline installment, having released in 2019 without ever making its way to the West. Before Haunted Domain was announced, the most recent game in the series was the 2020 spin-off Yo-kai Watch Jam: Yo-kai Academy Y.

Yo-Kai Watch 2: Haunted Domain Revives the 3DS Sequel

The New Game is a Remake of All Yo-Kai Watch 2 Versions

Yo-Kai Watch 2: Haunted Domain was unveiled during the September 9 Nintendo Direct, where Level-5 confirmed that the project is in development for the Nintendo Switch 2. The new release revisits the adventures featured across all three versions of Yo-Kai Watch 2:Bony Spirits, Fleshy Souls, and Psychic Specters. Compared to the originals, Haunted Domain is planned to feature new story content and improved graphics. Level-5 also hinted at new Yo-kai being part of the package, albeit without going into any specifics.

Level-5 is officially framing Haunted Domain as an effort to preserve what made Yo-Kai Watch 2 special while updating its visual identity. While Psychic Specters was originally envisioned as the definitive edition of the game, the newly revealed remake now appears poised to take that mantle. Exactly when that will happen remains unclear, as Haunted Domain was announced without a release date or launch window. Level-5 has also stopped short of confirming whether Haunted Domain will include all version-exclusive content from the three original releases in a single package.

The return to Yo-Kai Watch 2 is especially notable given how difficult parts of the older series have become to access through conventional means. Nintendo shut down purchases through the 3DS eShop in 2023, leaving physical copies as the only straightforward option for players who do not already own the games digitally. Several entries have consequently become expensive collector's items, with both Yo-Kai Watch 2 and Yo-Kai Watch 3 ranking among the rarest and most valuable Nintendo 3DS games in 2026. Haunted Domain could thus give a new generation of players a more accessible way to experience one of the key entries in the oft-called "Pokemon killer" franchise without relying on aging hardware or increasingly scarce physical releases.

While Yo-Kai Watch 4 was available on both the Switch and the PS4, the series has traditionally been exclusive to Nintendo consoles. There is currently no indication that Level-5 plans to bring Haunted Domain to non-Nintendo platforms.
